We purchased a Dell Server plus Advanced 2000 Server with 25 Cals in 12/2000. We need to get another server but don't want to lose our Software. Since this software came factory installed, how do we get our CALS to the new server. I know I can purchase a Windows 2000 Advanced Server media, but I don't know about the CALs.

Thanks Much,

Paula

As long as you have documentation that you have 25 CAL's, then you don't have to worry about any transfering, etc. A server CAL is more along the lines of the honor system since there's nothing to prevent the 26th person from connecting to the server.

Just make sure you have enough CAL's and you're ok.

See my comments here in thread96-813148. Windows 2000 just asks how many licenses you have and you put the number in. Just don't lose your license packets (really just pieces of paper, no disks) in case you need proof in the future.

I'm not sure, but I think it was one of a few ways they snatched market share from Novell. Novell licenses were 2 to 3 times as expensive and had to be installed. Now that so many have switched to M$ servers, M$ is now enforcing licensing with their newer releases. Windows 2000 Server doesn't, but Windows XP does require activation. And I think so does 2003 Server as well.

The Licensing Manger in Windows 2003 Server is disabled by default.

I called Dell today, and they said that since the M$ 2000 Advanced Server plus 25 CAL licenses was OEM, that my software investment has to be tossed, if I want a new computer.

Is there any way around this. Is this true?

Paula

oem software is per specific server, yes... look into Software Assurance... lots of benefits...
