This is probably the wrong place but any help is appreciated. I have two PCs at home, one runs XP pro the other XP home. When I set the NIC cards to 100mb/full duplex the tranfers between the two PCs is very slow. When set to Auto, it is very much faster. Why? I have a Linksys switch in place.

When they aut neg, do you know what they are negotiating to?
Are you setting both cards to 100/Full when you fix the speed?

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Auto-Auto = Fine.
HDX-HDX = Fine.
FDX-FDX = Fine.
FDX-HDX = Bad.
HDX-Auto = Bad.
FDX-Auto = Bad.

As Stu mentions, make sure both sides are the same. If they are, then it is likely there is a problem with the cable/connection. Auto is almost always a fine choice.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.
