I apologize in advance. I read somewhere in one of these threads about a "heads up" when introducing a 2003 DC running DNS within a 2000 environment, but now I can't find the thread.

I've got a 2003 server running in a 2000 environment now, it's a DC, replication and all else are running just fine. I'm trying to remove the 2000 server from this child domain and just have to transfer the DNS and the FSMO roles over as my last steps. I'm about to do the DNS but recall reading a thread discussing DNS on a 2003 R2 server vs a 2000 server, but can't recall the details nor find the thread now.

Is there anything I need to be aware of before I transfer DNS to the new 2003 R2 server?

Yep, ran adprep from CD2 of the R2 discs, so I'm good there.

The link you point to refers to moving the DNS but retaining the same IP address. In my case I've built a new server and will be using the new servers IP address instead of the old server (I'll change the DHCP scope, etc. after I transfer). Do I still have to transfer the files/zones, etc. or can I not just setup DNS on the new server and let it replicate with the existing DNS server first, then simply shut down the DNS service on the old server?

If DNS is AD Integrated, then you should be able to just install DNS and Go. If it's not, then you need to make it integrated OR you would have to set the DNS zones as secondary to transfer them, then change them to primary or they will go offline (I had this problem recently).

There it is...it was integrated...brought DNS up on the new server and it brought everything over from the other server.

Thanks.
