Total newbie question, where to start?

Hi,

we have just been taken over, and currently run a very basic Intranet utilising asp pages and access databases. This all works fine for me as the self taught webmaster, but new guy in charge is gungho for us to start using SQL databases and such, I known nothing about this any ideas where I can start??

Please!!!!
