My daughter is going to school in Spain. She left me a message that her Toshiba Laptop's Monitor will not stay up.
Whe she opens the laptop the monitor will not stay up, but wants to close.

Since she is in Spain I cannnot look at it - anyone have an idea what might have happened?

Yep, the hinges on certain Toshibas and other laptops, wear out after a while...

only fix is to replace them or the case...

Anyone know how easy it is to replace hinges on a Laptop?

Do you have to buy the parts from the company that makes the Laptop or are they somewhat generic and can purchase from an OEM third party?

I would not recommend to my daughter half a world away to attempt to replace the hinges on a laptop. By necessity these hinges are tightly integrated into the chassis. Here's a look at how they go together:

I would try and devise an alternate system, using self-adhesive Velcro strips, attaching a 1-inch section of "hook" to the top back of the lid and another to the underside of the laptop, then a length of "loop" long enough to hold the display lid open while in use and, after use, can be run around the bottom to keep it closed.

Hey, it will look better than bungie cords!~!~! [smile]

wahnula - good suggestion on the Velcro!

I agree on the "daughter" part - she will be back in the States in May. Just thought I would check to see if it is something I could fix rather than have some Service Department do it.

For the time being my daughter is propping the monitor up from the back. I will forward the velcro idea on.

Depends on how patient you are and how adept you are with tiny parts...I use a 7-day pill container when I disassemble a laptop to keep the tiny parts in sequence and on hand. This repair looks fairly straightforward, and you can look at it this way- there will be no part of that laptop that you will not know how to replace!

But having it done professionally...well that money might be better spent towards a NEW laptop. Just remember to BACKUP everything first, whether it's fixed by you or a pro.
