Hello all,
I have a client who could not email me he was receiving the NDR message "could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.(server.contoso.com #4.4.7)". I checked MS website and found a Q article and sent it to him, he replies with thanks but also states that I have no reverse mx record listed for my ip address, and that’s why the mail never made it to my site. I have not heard from anyone else who is having this problem but after I sent the Q he can now send to me, I don’t know a lot about it and I was looking to the forum for some opinions, is it truly needed or not, I seen another article that say its not necessary for mail delivery. Any input is appreciated as always.

It's always a PEBKAC problem.

It is becoming increasingly more necessary for mail delivery. A lot of spam filters now look for a reverse DNS (or as you call it MX record - also known as a PTR. AOL definitely blocks mail if you don't have it.

Contact your ISP and ask them to create a reverse DNS record for you. They should provide one at no charge.

Cheers.

I agree - a PTR record has alway been a SHOULD, and is probably a MUST now. It won't do any harm to have one, so you have nothing to lose.
