Time/Date is wrong

When I enter a new record, using the Now() function, the info is actually placed in the next record, instead of the current one. How do I correct this?

Where is the now() function located? In a form event, as a default value in the field properties in the table, or ... ?

Please provide more info.

in the table.
perhaps I was not very clear on what I have. I am really new to doing this and am stumbling through it.
I have an access database on a share drive. I need to let multiple user have access to the base at the same time, and be able to let all of them see everything in real time, I also need to mark each entry with Now(). On the database view, the date appears on the next record line, rather than on the line of the record being entered/edited.
I'm probably way off base on how to do this.

By the way, how do I enter one of the "environ" commands that I keep reading about? Where does it go? I want to have the user name or id or something appear automatically in the base when they enter/edit something.
