I'm looking for a way to take two videos of a similar event and play them synchronized, side-by-side. Say a pair of 320x240 videos become a single 640x240 video of the same length. I'm relatively new to non-linear editing programs, and hadn't had much luck nailing down a search term in the help files for this.

I've done jobs similar to this before by exporting all frames to still images, tiling the images, and converting back to video, while muxing the audio together, but there has to be an easier way. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi
HMM a bit complicated seeing how Im no expert but this is how it can be done
In premiere add an extra 2 video tracks
presuming your 2 clips are say 640 by 480 ( but doesnt matter ) import each into each new track
choose say track 3 , video options,motion,
youll see your scene entering and exiting
study the page & youll see start & end point in the right panel ,
click on the start &change zoom from 100% to 50%
click on the end & change zoom from 100% to 50%
click on the start & youll see 80, 0 in the same panel as zoom enter 0,0 & the start will now center
do the same for the end point
youll now have no motion and the scene will be centre at 50%
drag it where you want in the distortion window , left or right of centre remembering that this will have to be done at start & finish
you should now have a stable 50% scene left or right of center.
Choose your background fill colour for transparency
ok back to track 3 & choose video options transparency, choose alpha channel
do the same for your second scene ofcourse having your scene on opposite side of your window

having done this you should have 2 stable scenes at 50% side by side
if you now put your title in say video track 5 it will be seen over the 2 scenes but if you put it on track 2 it will be behind the scenes & visible on the bottom 50% of the screen

hope this helps
its very clumsey but will show you what is possible

Works well, thank you. Couple of questions b/c I'm new to this.

First, why add a new video track for each? Is there something special about the initial two a blank project starts off with?

Second, the video layers according to video track number, smaller numbers on the bottom? I never really gave it much thought, but it's definitly a good thing to know.

Last are additions. I was wrong, they're not of the same length. Is there an easy way to make it hold the last frame of the shorter one instead of going blank, or should I just export the last frame and import it as a still image, setting its duration as needed?

And now the hard part, a timer? I'd like to be able to have a timer/stopwatch for the two clips, each stopping when that clip is done. The whole purpose of the side-by-side comparision is to show how much faster our product performs compared to the compeditor's, and a timer would really accentuate that. A simple numeric counter would do fine, but I'm not seeing anything like that in premiere's help files. All they have is their "stopwatch icon" while waiting for various tasks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this seems to be a very quiet forum , i thought some others more qualified might help
It seems your stuck with me & mate I know Very Little

the only reason I choose to add 2 extra tracks was to leave track 2 for your roll (if u wanted to roll the caption behind & below the 2 scenes) also u can add a background in track1 this way as well
as for having the clips the same length U can shorten one or do as u say which is probably the easiest , Premiere however does have the capability to hold the last frame or even extent the time frame to suit

theres a counter (in pal) here
any probs let me know.
