Thumbnail Images

I am writing a databse with a list of images (all jpgs) which can be exported.

I have 2 problems:
1. When an image is added I want to automatically create a thumbnail of the image and save the new image.
2. I need to look up the dimensions of the image for when it is exported for formatting.

Any help please.
