For some reason, all my open/save dialog boxes show all files in thumbnail view, whether or not there are any graphic files in the folder. As I prefer list view in dialog boxes I can set it for that but the setting switches back to thumbnail every time. This problem does not occur in regular explorer browsing where all my window and icon settings stay the way I set them (I know the BagMRU Size registry trick), it only happens in the folder views that come up in the open and save dialogs of various programs.

Exhaustive googling has brought me to the conclusion that I am the only one on the planet with this problem.

Something to experiment with if you like?

Delete all the Thumbs.db files on your computer (use search to find and delete).

Thumbs.db files are hidden and system files so make sure you have the options set to see them (Folder Options/ View, and Preferences in Search). Windows will automatically recreate them if it requires them, but this action may be affected by the next suggestion.

In Folder Options under View have you could look at "Do Not Cache Thumbnails" and experiment with that?

This disables automatic storage of folder thumbnails in a cache file. When you store thumbnail images in a cache file, Windows can reuse them instead of creating new ones every time you open a folder. If you disable this automatic storage function, folders that contain thumbnails might take longer to open.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
