I am using arcserve 2000 and brightstore 11.
On several of my drives (40/80 dlt) the thru-put will dramatically decrease from 340 MB/min to below 100 MB/min. If I run a cleaning tape it will jump back up for a day or two

Are my drives going bad

any help would be appreciatted

I experienced the same thing and it did turn out to be a problem with the tape drive. I contacted the manufacturer of the drive and they sent me some utilities to run against it. Luckily the drive was under warranty and they sent a new one. As soon as we hooked it up the thru put increased dramatically.

Good luck!

Check the database, media view to see if the tapes have soft write errors. Soft errors are where there is a spot on tape it can not write to, so it advances the tape and retries. As long as it completes the write before the retry counter max's out the job continues. Result is that it wasts tape and slows down the backup. Just wondering if in your case there are some of these soft errors.
