Hi, - Booted up yesterday (XP Pro) and went thro all and rather than the screen displaying my desk top it was just black. I noticed one of the neon green lights on the monitor went out but power was still to the monitor.
Soooooooooo, decided to reboot in safe mode. No problems this time, my desk top was displayed as normal and the green neon light on my monitor remained on. Rebooted again as normal and same thing happened. Screen showing blank/black.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I have had to borrow a friends monitor to get this to you.

1. Safe Mode uses VGA mode on your monitor. I suspect a hardware issue with your monitor unable to step up to higher resolutions.

2. The fact that another monitor worked reinforces this idea of hardware issue with your monitor. It certainly rules out that XP did not start.

3. This can be an early sign of an issue with your power supply. You should see if it is repeatable. If connecting your old monitor and a cold start leads to the same result, including it working in Safe Mode, replace the monitor.

2. Go to the manufacturer's website for your video board and download a new video adapter card driver set. There are often issues with Windows Updates and display drivers.

I been having a problem on a server with an older monitor.
The case was this:
User specified 1024x768 and 85 hz in display properties.
Windows stored the info .
Monitor goes black(can't handle the resolution/freq).
User reboot's but the resolition/freq. is already set ,
and still black monitor.

I deleted the video adapter from dev.mgr.
windows reinstalled it at next boot.
i set max. setting for the monitor 800x600 85hz .
then it's okay .

My point is setting higher resolution than the monitor copes with is stored and not reversible because you don't see anything .Only way is to remove the display adapter.

Bill - Thanks for your speedy suggestion. I will try syarr2003 suggestion first though. - - Syarr2003, can you please talk me thro this step by step on how to do it. Treat me as a thickie or a 2 year old child, I DON'T MIND.

Follow the link provided by mr.Bill .
Detailed description is there .
You haven't stated what kind of graphics card and monitor you have.
But the procedure is this .
-Open Device manager.
-Expand Display Adaper
-Mark it and choose uninstall
-Restart computer
-Restart your computer. After you log on, you receive a New Hardware Found dialog box with Video Controller (VGA Compatible) listed as the description and the Found New Hardware Wizard starts.
-Click Next to start the wizard.
-Click search for suitable driver, and then click Next.
-Click to clear all of the search option check boxes, and then click Next.
-Click disable the device, and then click Finish.
-Download the newest driver from internet for your graphics card.
-install the graphics card drivers.
-reboot
-Let windows use the new found hardware with the new drivers.

Is that detailed enough ...

Thank you Syar2003

I did what you said and cutting a long story short after Microsofts message that the driver I downloaded from the net was not digitally assigned, I went into settings, clicked advance, clicked on monitor and dropped the 85 Hertz that was showing, down to 75 Hertz.

Shut computer down, changed the monitor over to the suspect one and “BINGO” all was okay.

Thanks to you both. - - 3 points to each.
