thinkpad 380 vs 380E - com ports

Anyone know if there is a physical difference between the com ports on an IBM Thinkpad 380 and 380E?
We have a problem with a QuickBasic program that works fine on a 380, not communicating on the 380E. The port settings are the same, and ports verified as working. The only difference setup-wise is the 380 is running win95 and the 380e is running win98SE.
Any help appreciated.
