Thin client USB issue

Not sure where to put this one so we will start here.
Running a Wyse Thin Client with XP embedded. Trying to get a fingerprint scanner to work with it but having prior issues. The USB ports are outputting power but will not pick up any device plugged into them. Checked the device mngr and there is no USB section listed........
Anyone have an idea how to get that part up so I can use USB devices?


P.S. Also running an ELO touchscreen on it and due to limited ports would like a software keyboard if possible....

surely its a driver related issue?

are the port on the thin client USB 2? are the USB ports enabled?

Unknown Bios Password...... You think these people would have documented all their work but I guess that would be too helpful.

Defualt BIOS password for Wyse thin clients w/ XP embedded is "Fireport" as spelled, cap F is needed.
Yea it was disabled in the BIOS, that took care of the initializing USB issue but the whole reason for doing this was to install .net 3.0 framework but during the install it says it doesnt have enough hard drive space to install, and considering this is a thin client w/o a standard "hard drive" think I'm just screwed on installing pretty much anything locally.

hence why they are thin clients, so you dont have any local resources....

Making hardware and software changes on most thin clients requires you to have write access to the local flash drive. By default, Windows XP Embedded will write all changes to RAM which as you know is only temporary until the unit is rebooted or powered off. To make a permanent change, you need administrator access in the OS.

Yes im aware that its a thin client, which means its supposed to run programs and files off of the server. I know it doesnt have much storage space, just complaining. Cdogg I do have admin access and can make changes, but Im trying to get .net 3.0 installed and dont have enough room for that even and since the fingerprint reader needs that to run its installer, no dice on the bioscanner.

Not sure why this company purchased these instead of using an older machine w/ XP and attached the ELO to it, you can run remote desktop from it just as easy and then could have some local programs installed. And no, the reason they chose thin clients isnt for added security or the non-ability to install local programs, its because some company told them too before I was here.
Sorry this turned out to be more of a rant than anything helpful but thanks again for all the advice, dually noted.

Yep, limited storage space can be a problem. Your company could look into upgrading the amount of flash on each one. Older models that came with XP Embedded usually came with 512MB or 1GB but were upgradable to 2GB or 4GB depending on the model.
