Hello everibody,

Can someone tell me if there is a future for the FoxPro?
Microsoft will continue to suport him? I know there is a wish list for the Foxpro Toledo but how real will be this one. Will be a FoxPro.net? Can we asume that building software on FoxPro, we will still be in business in a couple of years?

Please help me! I need to make some big decisions on a company level.

Thank You

Bogdan Lazar

I have been writing FoxPro applications since the Dos version released by Foxbase Corporation, several years before Microsoft bought that company. The discussion that you raise, or rumor if you want to call it that, has been going around almost since the day that Microsoft bought Foxbase. The rumors gathered steam when Microsoft released Access and integrated Visual Basic into that product, and more rumors surfaced when they released SQL server. I don't know what Microsoft's plans are, but I seriously doubt if they will abandon Visual FoxPro. There is a huge installed base of FoxPro programs, and it is much less expensive to migrate an old FoxPro application to Visual FoxPro than Access, SQL Server, or any other DBMS. There is a place for each of these applications in the market, and each has their own advantages and disadvanges. It seems as if the pros and cons are becoming more blurred as the capabilities of each product increases, but I believe that there is still plenty of demand for FoxPro software and that Microsoft will continue to support it....for as long as they can make a profit on it.

Since there are people still running FP 2.0 apps under XP and it was last "updated" 10 years ago. Even if MS dropped support in the next couple of years (most unlikely), your apps today should be good for at least the next 5-7 years! Don't worry, as others have suggested, VFP in one form or another will likely be around longer than most of us!
