Another option (the one your asking for, I guess) is called ACPI.
ACPI, or Advanced Configuration and Power mgm Interface, allows software to shutdown your system to hibernate. You use that option if you're using UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) with software.
The UPS can tell your PC to hibernate during a power-out when the UPS batteries won't last much longer.
