I have someone who wants me to perform one of the most unholy acts, convert Quark files to <Shutter> Word.

I haven’t seen how complex the quark files are yet, but iv been told they arnt.

Wondering if anyone has done such a thing, or know of a technique which may help.

So far the best idea I have come up with is converting the Quark files to PDF, the use a PDF2Word utility or something like Omni to switch it. Then fix any of the mess in conversion.

Anything better then that?

I use TextTractor, an extension from Vision's Edge

This works great. it picks up all the text, even if not linked.

I save it in ascii, then in Word. There are many options, and you probably need to try to see which works best for your situation. You won't get the format that you have in Quark of course, but it really does a decent job of picking up all the text. Any illustrations with text will not be included, however.

Using the "convert folder" option, it can convert an entire folder in a minute or two.

Of course there is some cleaning up to do, but it has worked great for us.

This doesn't come free. I belive the cost is about $100 with upgrades running around $30.

On a cheaper scale, did you try "save text" in Quark? If you have only linked pages, this might do the job for you.

If yu happen to have a later version of Acrobat Pro (don't know if Standard has this), you can distill a PDF and Save As Word.
