Hi,
I'm trying to fix a Dell Optiflex 5200. I'ts got a pheonix BIOS and I am getting a 1:3:2 beep error. This aparrently means that "The test of the first 64KB RAM has failed to start". If I try all the other memory sockets with a single 32M strip i get this same message. However if I add a second strip of 32M RAM the standard memory test is executed and the whole 64M is counted - BUT the PC just hangs with a single DOS underscore flashing.
The A drive is accessed in the first instance, as you would expect but then the PC just hangs and doesn't read any floppy. The screen just shows the BIOS type and maker, and the completion of the memory test - I cannot even get into the BIOS to tinker ???

Can anyone help with a few hints or tips ??

I believe that system uses 72 pin SIMMs. They must be installed in pairs. They must also be in the same bank (Bank 0 or 1). If you have any more questions please tell me what motherboard and processor you have and what Operating System you are using. I will try to help.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi everyone.

I have found out that the error message I was getting was due to the main bord requiring the memory in pairs as John said above. This comes from me trying to eliminate my original problem, which I though was related to the error beeps but isn't.

My main problem is that I have a Dell Gs5200L which won't finish the POST. It completes up to the memory self test and then ... Zilch. Nothing. Nada !!

It was previously working up to a re-formatting exercise, when the f-disk was indescriminatley used. So I pretty sure the hard ware is ok.

Can anyone give me an idea, hint or clue ??

I may be wrong, but I thought Dell makes an extra partition to put system data on. If you delete this partition, it won't boot.
