Hello! First, Thank You! for any assistence in this matter.

My foremost problem is my laptop says I take it for granted. What scares me, though, is that my therapist agrees!

My question(s?) is (are):

Is my pwer cord and or AC adapter (brick?) bad? Or is it whatever is just inside the computer that these attach to (i.e. the "power supply," if that's what it's called??). Or, is it something else altogether. [like, my socks ...!"]

the gory details:

I bought used [but, "bran new in box"] about twelve months ago, a Gateway 6510 G[eewhi]Z Laptop. Not long thereafter I took out the memory and replaced it with two 1GB sticks. (I can't remember but I think it HAD one stick 512 MB?) I've performed no other acts of sabotage on it, and have had no problems at all with it. Untill two weeks ago, anyhow, when, as I was "carefully" moving it, the power cord, where it plugs into the back of the notebook, rubbed up against the wall. The monitor fell black as the power immediately was cut off. "Funny, or, not so funny thing is," I thought to myself at the time, the battery was fully charged. But apparently was cut off, too. I'd wonderd if the cord seemed just a little bit brittle in spots, but also wonderd if it was my imagination.

Over the next week this occurred three, maybe four more times. I would remove the cord from the back of the notebook and then replace it, maybe having to fiddle with it a little more each time, but all would be well again. Untill, "the last time" it happened. I fiddled and faddled for almost a week, and pretty much gave up, figuring I needed a different tack: like FIXING IT!

While my teeny brain and I scoured the web looking for advice/info on diagnosing and repairing this, my wife plugged it in and, of course, it started, enabling me to type some hopefully helpful data, which follows. I left out the "BIOS Setup Utility" Page "Security," and hope I don't overkill you with too much other useless garbage, but, knowing what I know (or don't) about computers, don't ask me for my shoe size....

Awhile and more fiddling later...
I got it started again again and ran Belarc Advisor; following are those data, also. Hope they help.

Anything else I can do or run, please, lemmee know!!
Once again, I hope I'm not overkilling you with garbage. And, once again, Thanks!

What my 6510 reads WHEN it started/s up:

Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0

Press <F1> to resume, <F2> to Setup

The "Main" BIOS Setup Utility has always reverted to

System Time: [00:00:00]
System Date [01/01/1988]

Video Memory: 8MB (by the way, and is "on-board?" I think?)

"Advanced" page fields read

> DMI Event Logging

Plug & Play O/S: [Yes]
Legacy USB support: [Enabled]
Large Disk Access Mode [DOS]

Auto Dim: [Enabled]
Battery Auto Learning: [Disabled]

Boot Screen: [LCD+CRT]
Quiet Boot Mode: [Enabled]

Local Bus IDE Adapter: [Both]
Internal LAN: [Enabled]
Internal Modem: [Enabled]

and when "DMI Event Logging" is highlighted and "Enter" pressed, the fields read

Event log capacity: Space Available
Event log validity: Not Valid
view DMI event log: [Enter]
Clear all DMI event logs: [No]
Event Logging: [Enabled]
Mark DMI events as read: [Enter]

DMI event log reads:

03/23/2006 16:39:49 Pre-Boot Error:
Memory Size was Changed

Continuing, or, back to the BIOS Setup Utility, under the "Boot" page reads as:

DVD/CD ROM Drive
Removable Device
Main Hard Drive
Boot to LAN
USB Storage Stick

And that's that.

So I reset the date and time, hit <F10> to save and exit

and maybe a page goes by (not sure - slow typer too busy trying to type what I can down) then stops, giving me a chance to type (above I tried to be verbatim. the following is, I hope, close enough):

Broadcom UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) v2.0.5
copyright blah
blah
All rghts rsrvd

Intel Base-Code, PXE-2.1 (build 082j)
blah stuff
PXE E61 Media test failure, check cable
PXE MOF Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
Operating System Not Found

At which point, with great anticipation I get my sledghammer outa the garage and hit

"Enter"

and things seem to go normal, with Windows (XP) starting up, I click my user name and enter password, fall asleep for five hours - or, minutes, while all the stuff on startup clumsily bump into one other, with what little space they have left on the hdd . . . !

One other thing, though, which is new: at this point, the wireless radio network (blue light) is turned on and I press/hold Fn key while hitting <F2> to turn it off. Of whatever significance THAT is if any ....

But, all is cool untill I rub the power cord/cable, where it's connected to (in the back of) the notebook's power connector, between it(self) and some other object, in just the right way . . . .

Thanks Again!!!
. . . .

p.s. NOTe: noticed, above, is this of significance...??:
