I am getting an error stating "The instruction at 0x04b1df35 referenced memory at 0x000000e0. The memory could not be read." If anyone has had this problem could you tell me what causes it and how I can fix it?
I'm no expert on this matter, but use google and download, for free, prog called memtest, or memtest-86. Run memtest on that ram and see if its bad or not.
It may take a long time and run even maybe overnite to find out if its bad or not, so be prepared.
I get a similar error about 1 out of 10 times (seems to matter what boot sequence) I boot up because of a program I run in the background. I just kill the program and restart the program, everything is OK.
Open question, is there any way to set a custom "boot sequence" in WinXP? I'd like to delay the start of this program until last.
Definitely sounds like RAM to me. If you have multiple sticks, try running just one stick at a time to see which stick is bad. I had a similiar problem and the manufacturer sent me a replacement stick for free.
I would say that somewhere in the replies here you likely have your answer. Either its a bad stick of ram, or a former good stick of ram gone bad, or its a program causing the problem.
Depending on your os you can stop some programs from starting at bootup and there is one more possibility, i would say its likely 3rd in line, but there are programs that install themselves without our approval, usually via the net, and they cause probs sometimes. To check that aspect out you can google and download "hijack this" and/or adaware and/or spybot search and destroy, all have free versions. Hijack this is the most complicated of the bunch.
But, if you have tried the first two suggestions and still have the prob, you could try the third. YOu can even cut and paste the results here and get help to deciper the results as the people around here are very very good at that, i know as they have helped me and many others with that.
