The MAPI Spooler could not be started. Close and then restart

Outlook clients received this message this morning. I got the clients running after restarting the Exchange Server. Although it could be a damaged mapi32.dll according to the KB i don't think it is due to the problem going away following the reboot (could be wrong). May be a problem with the AV on the Exchange server and it's update.

When the clients accessed the exchange server they received all messages that had been read/deleted over the past week.

I'm not an Exchange expert so could someone inform me of the reason for the error and why the mail was resent?
