Hey, i'm using an XP pro box and I'm having trouble receiving e-mail. I get error number 0x800CCC0D. The host 'xxx.xxx.xxx' could not be found please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Now I know that the server name/account name/passwords are all fine yet I still can't connect. I can browse the net just fine. But I can't ping the mail servers. There is a proxy server on the network that we all go through....I'm guessing that's where my problem is, I'm not sure if the XP box has the right permissions....Also I can't connect to Kazaa, and I'm pretty sure it's for the same reason I can't get my e-mail..Any suggestions?

I am making a hunch in writing this that you are attempting to connect direct to your ISP's POP3/SMTP servers from your LAN, but need to run through a proxy to access it. I assume that there are other machines on the LAN that can connect to the email with no problems.

The SMTP/POP3 protocols don't support proxy connections out of the box. What normally happens is that on the proxy server there is a dummy port that POP3 connections get forwarded to, which then connects to the ISP pop3 server and returns any results to the proxy and back to the client machine. Same for SMTP.
I would check the names or IP addresses of mail servers (and their port numbers) in other machines. While you are at it, also check the web browser proxy settings as setting this correctly can speed things up considerably over auto detect.

See, I've checked the settings on other machines that do have e-mail access and I've made sure that the settings are the same. Still, nothing. I've tried everything that I know, and windows isn't really my strength. I've made sure that the name servers are the same, port numbers are the same and that proxy settings are the same. But I still have the same problem. I'll keep trying...Any other suggestions?

Appreciatively,
Rodrigo

Rsanchez,

One more thing to check: You are definitely getting an IP address - otherwise you wouldn't be able to browse the web, but I would check that the address your PC has got is permitted to connect through the proxy server.

I would also check that the DNS servers are set correctly (you don't specifically mention those, but with web browsers, the connections quite often get proxied forward and results returned).

John

Well see that's where I'm stuck. I'm not sure how to check to see if the IP I've given the machine is permited to connect through the proxy. Also about the DNS servers those are entered correctly as well. Thanks for your help.

Rodrigo,

One way to check is to go to a machine that works, then try and ping and see if you get a response.
then try the same on your XP machine and see if you get a response.
It may be that ping requests are not forwarded if you don't get a request from either, but I do from my box here.

Also: You say you have given the machine an IP - do the others have manually assigned addresses or is it DHCP allocated? If the latter, then you may want to switch over to it.

John

Is there any chance that you're using PC-Cillan for your anti-virus?

No, I'm not using PC-Cillan and there is no need to switch to DHCP since there is no DHCP server. All IP's are static. I'm pretty sure all my settings on my machine are OK, and there is something on the server side of things that I'm not configuring corectly. I'll keep fighting with this thing.....Thanks for all your help, but gor now, nothing.....Anything else you think could be done?
