I thought I would ask for some opinions on the division between Microsoft and other companies like Cisco and so on.

It seems like there is a large division between working with MS products and the others. Now most back end servers dont run MS products. But most desktops do.

I could be wrong, but I seem to notice a huge division between terminology and these companies products. Speaking with a few experienced Network engineers, who deal with Unix and Cisco, they have very little idea about MS Server terminology and settings, domain structure and so on...

So im wondering thesedays does one choose 1 path or the other, or try to incoporate the 2 together? Are they so foreign that this is difficult or can they work together?

Im sitting here wondering if I should continue on and finish my MCSE or start down the Cisco certification path. Any advise or observations is welcomed :)

Go for CCNA. Unlike MCSE, employers do consider Cisco certs.
MCSE is a joke. I got MCSE 4 years ago, and became MCSE 2000 this year, but employers reject my resume for having no CCNA.

I'm personally going for a little variaty. I don't feel they're that different. I have my MCSA, and am probably going for my CCNE and then maybe some Linux certs after that. Maybe even some programming certs (MCAD?) to make myself a one-stop solution to emplyers :) I think that's a pretty good route to go.... Darrell Mozingo
