We are a small company with only 6 users with Microsoft Access 2000. The first person who opens the DB has no problems but when a second person tries to open the db, we get a message "the database has been placed in a state by "USER" and the second person can not get into the DB.

Microsoft explains that this is caused when a form that is opened by the first user has a control that references a subform control, that when you try to open a second instance of the DB we get the message and cannot get into the DB. Microsoft has a patch SR-1/SR-1a to this, but it causes additional problems and we had to uninstall it

hen we leave one computer open that does not have that form opened, we don't have the lock out problem, but I would love to know if there is a solution to this problem, that doesn't involve the service release or leaving a 2nd computer to an unopened form

Muchas Gracias

First make sure that your database is being opened shared and not exclusive. When you know for sure that it is opened shared, have one user open the database. Then using another computer go to the folder that contains your database and make sure there is an ldb file with the same name as your database but ending with .ldb not .mdb.

If there is not an ldb file, the problem is with your network permissions. Make sure all your users have write access to the folder that contains your database.

You might want to look into splitting up your database into a front-end/back-end system. Did so at my work and it solved all of the sharing problems. The only chance you have of interfering with each other is if you're both trying to change the same record at the same time.

Hope it helps.
