I have never managed to quite get a clear answer on this one so I hope that someone can clear this up once and for all: -

Is there or is there not, such a thing as a generic Windows 95 boot disk with CD support. (if not how comes 98 can manage it?)

I have a bit of a nightmare everytime that I have to reinstall a Win95 machine and would sleep better a night if I knew that I could boot to a CD to extract the setup files

Thanks

Graham

Why not make your own?
make a win95 boot disk and add a couple of items, 1/ btcdrom.sys, oakcdrom.sys, mscdex.exe
make/edit config.sys and autoexec.bat to call the cd drivers and mscdex.exe
e.g in config.sys you need to add a line:-
device=btcdrom.sys /d:cdrom
or
device=oakcdrom.sys /d:cdrom
(note one or the other will work with just about all cdroms)
in autoexec.bat you need to add a line:-
mascdex.exe /d:cdrom

if the config.sys bit worked then you should get a message from mscdex telling you what your cdrom drive letter is

or
- or make your own. Any DOS boot disk should boot any PC compatible. The difference is in the .sys CD-ROM driver.

The oak driver is pretty good, but doesn't work with some drives - especially older ones. Samsung's driver, sscdrom.sys is far more generic.

Hope this helps

The one with 98 isn't all that good. I agree , make your own. However, to really be complete you need several with different versions. And I include a boot menu to choose from 6 different sets of drivers plus the option of no cd support. Once you have drivers in and working from their own directories the different versions can be overwritten to the root. I also include the SCSI set to work with one controller that I use heavily. Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Thanks for all your help,

I think that there is no doubt about it - I will have to make my own with multiple drivers.

Cheers
