I heard that it is better to keep the BE as close to a HDD root as possible, preferably in the root, because the deeper the BE is burried, the slower, a lot slower it gets. It that true, or is this a myth.

The best place to keep a back end is in your chair. Oh, wait...that's not what you meant, is it?

You're close. The truth is that what makes the difference is how close you are to the virtual directory you're using to connect to it. So if you have it buried under 34 directories and your virtual (mapped) drive points to the root, you're hosed. But you can keep the file in the same directory, map a drive directly to the directory where it's stored, and you will, in many cases see a world of improvement.

Lots of people prefer to use UNC references, which start at the computer name. I'm not sure how they are affected by all of this. It may well be that the same hold true for UNC references, in which case, yes, you would want the BE as close to the root as possible.
