Howdy all ,
This looks like the place where some smart folks can help me out with my query .
I'm currently using a Conexant HCF V90 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI modem in my Dell 8200 system ( Win ME , 256 RDAM , 1.7 Pentium 4 ) . After some searching it's come to my attention it's not a very good modem .
I experienced frequent disconnects and time outs and I noticed this happening more during the Winter months , especially during a cold wet spell or a warm rainy day . My son's computer ( Win 98SE , 750 P3 , 256 SDRAM ) use's a Ambient HAM modem but it'll stay online forever it seems and does very well . Here in the past few days we had some nice warm weather and sunny and the Conexant is now doing great. So I figure maybe it has to do with the outside phone lines . I have two separate lines installed and the line we use for the Internet is 7 months old and I live close enough to the Phone Office to qualify for DSL service ( Which at the moment I'm considering but the cost $$$ and problems of networking two computers and such to share the DSL is holding me back ) .
Would installing a Ham Modem be more beneficial or a Full Hardware type such as the USR V.92 Performance Pro. be the best bet to push the signals through during rainy and/or cold days ? Also how much of a problem would it be installing either one , since I'm fairly knowledgeable working on computers but can get freaked out in a second if something goes wrong ;-).
Thanks for any suggestions .
The Best Bet , Ham or Hardware ?
