OK, so my Exchange saga continues. I found the Exchange agent, but haven't installed it yet. I want to bounce off some ideas to see if I can make this work before I do further reinstalls.

A bit of background. This all started when I noticed that the the Backup Agent RPC Server service was shutting down periodically. As a result a lot of the mailboxes were getting skipped. I set it so that the service restarts when it shuts down, but this is not a reliable solution. Another problem I encountered was when I tried to restore a mailbox at the request of a user, and was unable to do so. This prompted me to think that there was something fundamentally wrong.

Onto, when it started getting worse. So, I found the DBAXCHG directory and tried to run the Config.exe utility... unsuccessfully. I found out that I need to be logged on as the ARCserve AD/exchange user to be able to do that. Since I didn't know the password for it, I reset it in Active Directory, logged on, and ran the utility. It said that it completed successfully. I also made sure to change the password in the login tab for the service. Well, the problem is that on the ARCserve server, I am getting errors. According to the logs, the error is:

E3150 Unable to connect to network drive. (DRIVE=[\\server name\Admin$, EC=INVALID PASSWORD)
E3150 Unable to connect to network drive. (DRIVE=[\\server name\Admin$, EC=SESSION CREDENTIAL CONFLICT)

I tried to modify the username for the jobs, by going into the Job Status, right-clicked on the job->modify user name, but when I type the new password, and click Verify, I get an error message saying "Cannot connect to remote machine". Now, I know for a fact that the computer itself is able to see the Exchange server, and I was able to successfully map the Admin$ share to a drive, while logged on as the ARCserve AD user, but ARCserve seems to have other ideas.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this? This is driving me insane!

For the sake of being complete, this is a Windows 2000 shop, running Active Directory and Exchange 2000. ARCserve 2000 (Version 7.0, Build 1100)

Thanks for all the help you can provide.

I have given up on brick level mailbox backups a long, long, time ago. They are slow and a constant battle. For the cost of an agent licence you can purchase Ontrack Power Controls. With this utility you can open a full Exchange DB backup and restore a single mailbox or even a single e-mail. It is your best freind during a disaster.

Backups and Restores much, much faster....

There is my two cents.
