Anytime I try to start an Office 2000 application (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook), I get the following message: &quot; The application must be installed to run. Please run setup from the location where you originally installed the application&quot;. Interestingly, if I have a shortcut on my desktop to a specific Office document, say a Word file, it will open Word and the document without a problem. Following advice in the MS Knowledgebase, I have downloaded and installed SR-1a, but that hasn't solved the problem.<br><br>It seems to have something to do with where the Office icons on my desktop are &quot;pointing&quot; to to find the correct .exe file.<br><br>Any suggestions?<br><br>Lee

Here's another twist. The problem is transient. It is always present when I first boot up the computer. I can click repeatedly on an Office Icon and still get the same error message. However, if I come back and try again later (say, an hour), the program will sometimes open properly.<br><br>Figure that!

Have you run repair? Have you attempted uninstall/reinstall? I might do that if I were you. <p> <br><a href=mailto:techsupportgirl@home.com>techsupportgirl@home.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>

PS: I'm not much one for uninstall/reinstall, just to let you know, that's rarely my response. In this case, however, it seems to be confused about where you ran the install from. Once you &quot;connect&quot; after working for awhile, I'd do as I suggested so that you have a &quot;clean&quot; install. Else, you may have this problem forever. <p> <br><a href=mailto:techsupportgirl@home.com>techsupportgirl@home.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office2000 several times, all with the same result: &quot;the application must be installed...&quot; After my initial posting I discovered that programs weren't randomly &quot;waking up&quot; later in the day as first appeared. Rather, if I first opened a specific Office file through a desktop shortcut, I could then open other Office applications from their desktop icons. It seems that once one Office application is open, the others can be recognized.<br><br>It's weird, but I guess I can live with it if worst comes to worst.<br><br>Lee

I had a similar problem when I used FP2000 after I had installed it from a Snapshot. The solution I had was to install the 'Microsoft Windows Installer' (It was installed from the MSI directory of my FP2000 CD).

This cured MY problem.

Any Use???

I am having a very similar problem with office 97 pro. However, I am unable to launch the office applications even by trying to open a save file as mentioned above. Could this be some kind of fowlup in the registry conserning the microsoft installer or microsoft office?

I am having the same problem, but with a slight twist. If one user logs in, he/she may get the message that Office must be installed to run, but another user may get right in.

Microsoft's response is to re-install. We have 1200 students and 250 faculty members, so this probably isn't going to work for us since it seems to follow the user rather than the machine! Anybody have a clue on how to work around this one? JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

This ones being going a while. Have you tried running Excel, Word or whatever (Office products only) and &quot;re-registering&quot; them through the /regserver switch?

To do this, click on START->RUN and specify the application path (normally in PROGRAM FILES) and append /regserver to the application.

This is normally the last resort and should not be performed if other steps have not been completed and tested.

Q233529 is the Microsoft TID associated with this problem, I think. Especially for those who have user profiles. This is such a pain! JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

A suggestion... under the heading of:

Why not &quot;give it a try&quot;...

BACKGROUND POINTS:

1) You have had this rather significant problem for quite some time,

2) You are employed at reasonable sized SCHOOL.

3) Microsoft, with Bill Gates in the lead, has EXPRESSLY targeted SCHOOLS with their software, and their DOLLARS. I don't recall the specifics, but I do recall that Bill Gates has contributed a SIGNIFICANT amount of money to various schools.

SUGGESTION:

...That you appeal DIRECTLY to Bill Gates, and POINTEDLY ask him to help in eliminating your LONGSTANDING problem. If you phrase your appeal in terms of HIGHLIGHTING the fact that Bill Gates is concerned about helping schools, together with the OUTSTANDING problem, it should be possible to &quot;get through&quot; to Mr. Gates.

I'm sure Mr. Gates could easily arrange for one of his experts to visit your SCHOOL personally. In fact, Microsoft might decide to use such a &quot;situation&quot; to gain considerable benefit from such &quot;contact&quot; with &quot;end-users&quot;, especially ones with SIGNIFICANT problems at SCHOOLS.

This could be seen by Microsoft and Bill Gates as making a move that will &quot;gain the public's attention&quot; in a POSITIVE way. And it will help Microsoft significantly in its effort to counter those who believe and claim that Microsoft is &quot;too big of a GIANT&quot; to care any longer about the welfare of the general public (and schools).

I think it's worth a try...

Yes, we are actually pursuing that option. I think that Microsoft doesn't think much about situations where the users 'roam' and that don't have a 'one computer-one user' model. There are lots of things (like profiles!!) that are a problem for us. But what choice do we have? JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT
