textrange.findText() -- what are the 2nd & 3rd args?

I have searched everywhere on the net and there are numerous examples of the findText() using the 2nd and 3rd args, but *none*, not even the 'Javascript programmers reference', lists these args in the definition, let alone actually explain them.

What are these mystery arguments?
