text fields in triggers

i am trying to create a trigger that will log data upon delete or updating. i see that the BoL say that triggers don't deal nicely with text fields. is there any way around this? pointers? do i need to pass in all my data to a stored proc to do anything with text fields?

(cold fusion 4.01, sql server 7.0)
