This reminded me of when I was little and we were on a party line and you would call 1193 or 1194 and hang up and your phone would ring along with a neighbor that the phone company had assigned to you.
Oh the "good old days" when phone sets weighed 5 pounds, no decisions to make as there was only one type of phone to choose from - a desk phone, rotary dialing only, one color - black, one cord length hard wired into the wall, one local phone company, one long distance phone company. If you got caught with a longer cord on your phone, the service man (no female's back then) would remove it and give you a lecture
