Terminal Services LIcense for XP Pro and 2000 Pro

Hi All,

Do both XP Pro and Win 2000 Pro installed on client workstation have an enbedded license to connect to a Terminal Server on Windows 2000 Advanced server?

Is it Windows 2003 that is starting to require CALs for the Terminal Services connections?

This is a very confusing issue, so:

1. Every workstation client needs a Server CAL for the connection, and a Terminal Server CAL.

2. Windows 2000 Professional, any Windows 2000 Server, and XP Professional, have embedded as part of their EULA the ability to draw from a Terminal Server Licensing Server from an unlimited store of tokens. All other versions of Windows would require the purchase of a TS CAL.

3. Just remember that a TS connection counts as a "seat" when calculating how many Server CALs you will need. Neither Win2k Pro nor XP Pro relieve you of this CAL requirement; only the TS CAL requirement.

Are you using TS for remote management or for Terminal Services? If you just want to use it for remote management, I am pretty sure you don't have to purchase any licenses and you can have up to 2 concurrent remote users at a time.

If I am wrong, someone please correct me, but that is my understanding from what microsoft has said in their help files.

The Windows 2003 Server can support two remote desktop sessions simultaneously.

This feature was in some of the early versions of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but is not there currently. Many are hoping when Service Pack 2 is released the feature will be restored.
