Hi All,

We have just setup a Win2K3 Term Server(HP ML350 Dual 3ghz Zeon, 2Gig Ram, 15000rpm Raid5), on our NT4 domain. Licencing Server all up and running well also.

Originally when we had only a few users (up to 6) people were fine with only every now and again a user complaining that their session hangs for a few moments but then comes back.
For the time we thought it was something dubious about their connection to the server - but we have since rulled this out.

Now we have ~20 users on it - and today was a shocker.
The server sometimes just sits there.
Not necessarily dependant on any specific Application being run - as it happens with various ones.
However when one person feels it - everyone is in the same boat.

When looking at performance Monitor there is next to no usage on the CPU's (which incidently shows 4 cpu's - however I understand this is because of multithreading), page file usage is fine, and the traffic on the NIC team drops off to nothing.
Once the freeze is over the NIC traffic picks back up and things are back to normal....for a time....
I have checked the Event log and there doesn't appear to be anything noticable here - except a few logs about applications hanging around that same time (but I just felt this was due to people crashing out of their sessions in frustration)

I am a little lost here people - as to what to start looking at/for?!?!!?
Can anyone point me in the direction where I should start looking?

I will be rebooting the machine to fix the Page file at 3070mb - to see if this does anything.
Failing that I will disolve the NIC team - and see if there is something in this.

Sorry for the long winded explaination - but can anyone shed any light/assistance for this?

Thanks in advance!!

Troy

Did you already have a look at the Event-Viewer to see if there are some Warnings or Errors ?
Also check for the latest drivers for you network-card(s)...

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yeah looked in the event viewer - basically the only items of consideration were the ones which were saying certain apps have hung around the same time.
Havn't checked the NIC drivers - will do so.

BUT had a good read through this doc:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/networking/TeamingWP.pdf

And this shed a hell of a lot of light on how the NIC team works - so am focusing on this for the time being. Have made a couple of changes to the settings (ie different mode of Teaming) and will see if this resolves the issue - will post back confirming either way.

Thanks for the post!

Yup it was the NIC teaming....server was set to switch assisted load balancing - took this right back to simple fault tollerance.....
Problem solved.
