Hi all,

i have just copied some very very important files from my linux pc to a w2k server thru network. I have ensured that the files have been copied and I have deleted the ones on the linux box. The shared folder on the win2k was mounted on the Linux. The copying process has been made on the Linux system.

My prob: The copied folders were lacking some characters in their names so I look for the proper folder names in my Linux's trash but the previously deleted folders were not there. So I choose undo copy on my linux system so that I get back the folders to its initial location but the folders could not be copied and they only disapeared on the win2k box.

Now all my files are gone and it's very imporatant for me to get them back.

1. Is there any place where Linux has kept the files which have been selected to be copied?

2. Is there any place where Linux has kept the files that were deleted?

All suggestions welcome!!!!

If you delete something in linux using the shell command, it's pretty much gone. However, if you deleted it from the desktop gui, then it goes to the current user's trash can. If this is the case and you haven't emptied the trash yet, it may be because you were looking in the wrong trash. To answer your 1st question, linux doesn't put files anywhere special when they are selected. It just flags them and waits to see what you want to do with them such as copy, delete or whatever. Have you tried to get them back from the windows trash? Sometimes there are ways to fix files that were copied directly from linux to windows or the other way around. The main thing is to try to get them back. Until you do, it's a good idea to keep writing to the disk to a minimum to avoid overwriting deleted files. Even deleted files can be recovered in many cases using special tools. A lot of them can be downloaded for free from places like

Thanks for your message,

1. I have not used the shell comand for deleting, only the gui.

2. There's nothing related to my files in the trash can. Is there another trash where I should look for? refering to "it may be because you were looking in the wrong trash"

3. I have noticed something: If i delete a file/folder with the 'delete' button, there's no confirmation and the file/folder goes directly to the trash. If I right click on the file/folder and I select delete, the system ask for a confirmation but the file is not moved in the trash bin.

4. Like I have mentioned there's nothing that has been deleted on windows..

Thanks for additional input!

I have given Ext2 Undeletion a try but the howto is too complex for me.

Any GUI tool?

Thanks!

is there a big difference between ext2 and ext3 for the undeletion process. Most articles are talking about ext2!
I think I've got ext3!!! Not sure about it.

Thanks
