i am getting (when i specify 25) "unable to connect to (ip of email server) on port 25

if i don't specify port (i think it defaults to 23) then i am able to give name/password then i get "failure initializing....shell process may not have been launched"
on the server i get tlntsvr event id 4049 "error creating cmd process - a required privilege is not held by the client"

why can't this work easy like in nt

You probably have WIndows Firewall loaded and it it blocking port 25.

I hope you find this post helpful.

hey marc
no i checked my xp pc and the mail server - no icf on either
is there anything else that could be blocking it?
i am able to telnet to pop3 port

There has to be some other kind of firewall device that is blocking the port. Can you telnet to the port on the server itself?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

A virus checker like Mcafee can also block telnet 25 to prevent mass-mailing worms.

no virus software on my pc or the server
i'll try it from the server
thx

ok
i tried from the mail server itself - telnet to its ip on 25 - same error
then i tried from the mail server to the dc on 25 - success!
what do you make of that?

Make sure the SMTP service is running.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

we are receiving emails and sending ok
but i'll check

Does your PC have access granted in Access->Connection control in the SMTP Virtual server settings?

nick!!!!
u r a genius!!!!
being new to a lot of this i thought that access applied only to incoming (as in outside the office) connections

care to enlighten me a bit
thx so much

No it applies to all SMTP connections - SMTP is used to send messages (e.g. between mail servers) internally or externally. This is the standard that all mail servers around the world use to send internet mail to each other.

Other protocols, with much richer functionality, are usually used by mail clients; in this case, Outlook uses MAPI, an Microsoft built protocol, to connect to Exchange.

The SMTP service manages the SMTP config. Some other Exchange service manages MAPI connections/config.
