Hi,

Im just seeking some advice on best practice to Secure Telnet Connections.

I have an ADSL Router
NT4 Server

I have an ADSL Router which I can setup to forward connection on port 23 (Telnet) to my NT4 server which hosts an application which can be run via a small telnet program.

I have tested this and it works fine. I can connect through the router to the server.

My question is. Im really worried about leaving port 23 open, as its well known to all sorts of people and may be an easy target for hackers to get in.

I thought maybee setting up telnet on another port, but im not sure if this will work.
Ive thought also I might use putty??. As I belive this is a more secure connection client.

Would someone mind passing on some advice here.?

Many thanks
Brendan

If your router is forwarding the port, scans of your public IP should not reveal the port is open. In that sense you should be safe. It would be nice to change the default port, but I can't find any documentation. Definitely make sure you have the latest service pack.

Putty can connect to other more secure servers, but for anything to be encrypted, both ends must be able to use the same key, NT cannot do this.

This would be a good time to tighten your password scheme, especially for administrators and domain administrators.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
