tell me about installing Linux OS to my pc? 1

hello! how are you?
i have to use linux for my C++. but using it through the modem is very slow sometime.
so i want to intall Linux OS to my PC. i am not too good with computer. what should i get? red hat? does it matter which one i use?
can i get this free ?

Linux is open source and free. I recomand you LinuxMandrake 7.*. All the needed information you may find without any problems on internet. John Fill
