When I RightClick Taskbar > Toolbars > (the list is grayed out)

This happened after repositioning the taskbar from bottom to top to side etc. (maybe too quickly!! all my quick launch icons actually flew off the taskbar and ended in a funky window)... then my problem began.

My Taskbar is not locked and I can add/remove "quick launch" from the properties menu.

I found some older posts here but they all pointed to registry fixes and third party freeware. I looked a quite a few registry suggestions but saw none with the suspect keys.

I did SFC /scannow, McAfee scan with latest engine and Dat files.

Windows XP Pro latest updates

I can fix the situatuion with a restore (one day back) but would rather know how to fix the problem.

All ideas welcome

Have you repeated the procedure of moving the Taskbar (after a successful restore) and does the problem still occur then?

Yes linney it works fine after the restore and I haven't been able to break it again.

Thanks BadBigBen I saw "Taskbar Repair Tool" in my forum search but it was from a few years back. I will certainly give it a try and let you know the results.

I tried Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! and now have my toolbars list back, but there was a price to pay; I lost my background picture.

Strange though at boot up I see my background picture then it disappears when the desktop icons appear.

Rt Click desktop > display properties > on desktop tab my background options are greyed out.

Then at shutdown the background picture appears again while shutting down.

could it be because I haven't registered Taskbar Repair tool?
any thoughts welcome...

No, that should not make your background pic disappear at all...

I've got a feeling that there may be something more amiss than meets the eye...

suggestion, run a HiJackThis Log and paste it here...

also try to create another user, and see if it behaves like the present one...

Thanks BadBigBen I'll try it when I get back home and post the results.

Thanks linney

I usually keep a very clean PC with faithful backups just for cases like this.

It only takes a few hours to "format", reload the OS, restore software and data, if you're organized (but still a pain).

This time I'm in no rush so I'll dig thru all your links and see if a repair works.

Thanks to both You and Ben.

use HJT to fix the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

Reason: it is the W32/Rbot-QE worm, ZOTOB-G worm, or BRAVE-A trojan...

The following are not necessary to be run from startup, and can be deleted with HJT:
