I need to set up task planning depending on resource availability in MS Project 2003.
This may be quite a newbie problem, but I haven't found it in FAQs.
Sorry for possibly incorrect terms, I don't have an English version of MS Project, only Russian, so I need to translate Russian terms back to English, hope you will understand
The problem is such:
I have two resources: Alex and Mick.
Alex is ONLY capable of performing a task "Writing a technology report".
Alex MAY also be involved into another task: "Installing a system", along with Mick.
"Installing a system" is started at the fixed date: 17.02.2004, and has fixed labor cost: 64 men-hours. Duration of the task should be calculated on the resources available.
So I need to set it up in a such way:
If I decide that Alex WILL participate in "Installing a system", this task should be planned for 4 business days (64 men-hours / [2 men * 8 hours])
Therefore starting of "Writing a technology report" should be planned to 24.02.2004, as Alex will be busy before that date
If I decide that Alex will NOT participate in "Installing a system", this task should be planned for 8 business days.
And starting of "Writing a technology report" should be planned to 17.02.2004, as Alex will be free by this date.
Task linking will not help in this case, because these are the tasks that are linked, not the resources.
If I link the tasks, "Writing a technology report" will start only after the "Installing a system" will be completed, though these tasks are performed by different resources.
How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.
