I was trying to install a software called MultiPC, which eventually failed and my task manager has gone bad since then.

The effects are: my XP logon screen is gone and it is replaced with traditional login and I don't know how to chanage that.

More important issue is my task manager is not working. I can toggle between then tiny footprint mode by double clicking..but the problem is when i click the process tab there is absolutle nothing..the process tab is blank and so it the Users tab.

It seems that the software has turned on some security issue, so with regular administrator account I am not able to see all these things.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried going back to a restore point made prior to installing the software? That is your quickest and easiest solution.

You could try System Restore as a one stop fix. Select a Restore point before the crisis occurred.

Other things you can look at are Control Panel/ User Accounts/ "Change the way users logon or off", you must do that as an Administrator.

Perhaps copying Taskmgr.exe from another XP machine, or the XP CD, and replacing the System32 entry with it might solve the Task Manager problem?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Isn't it some way I could do it through the same account since the software was installed using the same account. One thing that I noticed during the software installation was that the registry and gpedit.msc popped up a few times. So I guess the software did made some registry changes. My guess is, it is trying to avoid general user from seeing the processes and likes since it was a MultiPC software. It has even enabled the screen lock property so I have to hit the password everytime the screen saver turns on.

On the point of restoring, my PC was infected with some worm few weeks ago and I am missing the rstrui.exe file so Accessories->System Tools -> System Restore isn't working anymore.

I would like to fix this without restoring, so I need help gpedit.msc and registry settings to make things work properly.

Thanks.

Any software installed, no doubt, would have been via an Administrative account with access to all parts of the machine.

At some point, as previous disasters are added to your list of woes, it comes to mind that the best course of action may be to backup your most valuable data, reformat and clean install the operating system.

Even repairing, instead of a new install, might fail as that tends to copy the corrupted settings across.
