I'm not windows 2000 expert but I know my way round fairly well.

Anyway, I am using a backup product but having some problems with it at present. Apart from being able to kill processes via task manager, some of them belong to the username "SYSTEM" and when I try to end these processes it says I dont have permission....access denied.

how can I get round this and kill these processes.

The username is not administrator, however it does have admin rights.

Many thanks
Mike

depends on what you're trying to kill...many system based processes are vital to the operation of W2K and can't be killed. however, there are instances when a process is still "in use" and can't be killed until the child is stopped. in this case, you can try a tool called Process Explorer to find out what objects are tying up the process you want to kill.

Go to sysinterals web site, and download Process Explorer. It's a free download that allows you to monitor your processes and what process is calling what other process. We had problems here and services.exe were hogging 90+ percent of the cpu. After downloading this tool, we were able to confirm that services.exe was trying to start a software package the engineers used. I killed the engineeriing process, contacted the vendor, and after they sent us the new SP's, problem solved. Glen A. Johnson
