Task lines doubled after saving

Hi
I keep on getting an issue where I save a Project file and when I reopen it either all or some of the lines have magically doubled themselves.
Any clue how to stop this? It's driving me mad!

What version of Project are you using? What service pack and cumulative update? Does this occur with all files or just one? Is the file stored on a network or locally?

Hi,
I'm using Project 2007 with SP3. It happens when stored locally or on a network. And it doesn't happen to all files - just totally randomly.

Are the tasks actually getting copied or do they just appear doubled? if you scroll up and down - does the problem go away?

The tasks are physically copied. If there are any predecessors, they are copied but on to the original task line. Eg
Task1
Task2 1
Task3 2

would become

Task1
Task1
Task2 1,1
Task2
Task3 2,2
Task3

This is certainly NOT normal behavior. Are there any macros running on these files?

Nope, no macros or anything. They aren't complicated projects, just super simple task by task ones.

I've requested at work to see if I can get an upgrade to 2010 in the vague hope it'll fix it - I'm running out of ideas!

Can you zip a copy of the file and attach it? Before trying to get upgraded to 2010 - it's possible your installation of Project is in trouble.

So a couple of suggestions:

[li]Find the global.mpt file in your user directory.[/li]
[li]Rename the file global.old[/li]
[li]Restart project.[/li]
[/ol]

I doubt it will fix the already ruined files, but try it for a few days to see if the issue recurs.

Alternatively, try a repair of Project through the Control panel.

(Sorry for my poor english)
It might be a (recurrent) display problem in case you do not have enough available RAM. How much installed and available RAM do you get when this case happens?
In fact, in case of RAM shortage, tasks might not be duplicated. (you can check it via a macro in VBA: just count tasks, for instance. Or just save, close and open again your project)
The tasks might only be duplicated on display.
Problem might disappear if you choose one or more of following solutions if you do not have enough RAM:
- do not work too much time with a lot of projects (>8 to 10), or do not sollicitate too much what I called the Project graphical display interface manager (which do not manage very well the Windows graphics cache manager) when launching many print previews or displaying too many Graphical views (Gantt, task usages, resource usage,...) during a session.
(Note: you may use the "Hide Window" function to only display your active project)
- reset your PC and start to work only with MSProject (no more other apps open, like Outlook, Lotus Notes, Powerpoint,...)
- add RAM ,if you can (> 2Mo is good, but with 3Mo, you'll feel better)
