.TAR repair

I have a compressed .tar file and it is "corrupt" please let me know how to repair
i found a program called ATR (advanced tar repair) but they want 30$ please let me know of any shareware/free programs
ps: may be in wrong forums but i cant find right one
please help me!

.tar files are unix compressed files -- try one of the Unix forums.
