We are using Veritas Ver 8.5 with an HP Surestore DAT 72I device. More often than not, we get an error message saying "no tape found in drive." There is a tape in the drive but no backup occurred. Thought maybe pushing tape in with too much force is causing this error message. But have used minimal effort to put tape in and still get this error message. Any ideas? Thanks.

There is a tape in the drive but is it the tape that the systems wants to use? Check the labeling on the tape, does it have one already? Have you tried the backup with a brand new unused tape?

Tape drive are highend engneering, most do the load process themselves and you just need to place the tape in the correct place, no pushing is needed.

The tapes that we use are those specified by the hardware. I will check with our administrator and the next time this happens, I will have him give me the tape in question and try a new one. If this doesn't work, what other suggestions can you give me? Thanks for your response.

When I said labeling I ment the internal lable which NBU writes when first using a tape. We erase all our tapes before reusing them so NBU always finds a nice blank tape in the drive when it needs to run a backup. This of course only applys to our standalone drives, and some tapes should never be erase as they have formatting on them which would be lost.

Thank you for the suggestion to erase the tapes. We will try that the next time this error message occurs.
