I have a NAS with a Dell LTO Library attached and it works fine. I have a remote site that I need to begin doing backups on. I have a Compaq DLT Library at the remote site.

I am having a difficult time understanding how to hook up the new library at the remote site.

Seems that I need to set up a server at the remote site as a Remote Storage Node and connect the Tape Library to it. So that it reads rd=TapeLibrary..\.\TapeLibrary or something like that.

Also, I don't understand what type of license is needed for this remote server and tape library. The types of licenses that I have are:
Autochanger module, 16 slots/16
Autochanger module, 32 slots/32
Networker Client Connections/5
Networker for Windows, Network Edition (10 clients per server/1 server)
Storage Nodes/1

Is the Storage Node license being used for the Tape Library that I already have configured? And I would need to purchase an additional license?

Am I on the right track? What are my options for configuring the remote site?

Thanks!

The Storage Node license is required for "a NW client which is not the NW server and which has backup devices attached". Consequently, such devices are remote devices (remote with respect to the NW server).

The Autochanger module covers the jukebox, no matter where it is located.

If you have all licenses, then just proceed as follows:
- On your NW server, make sure that your account (at the remote machine) is listed in the "Administrator" list.
- Go (or remotely logon) to your storage node and
- Run inquire and jbconfig to configure your jukebox along with the devices.
Read the questions properly (they change with the versions) and answer them correctly.

That's it.

I've tried to run inquire and the jbconfig command to no avail. Let me explain my scenario.

I have a Compaq Series 4120 DLT with a Quantum DLT 4000 Drive. I've installed the Quantum DLT 4000 driver on the server under Device Manager. However, I don't see anything under Device Manager that mentions the Compaq 4120, nor do I know where to find any drivers for it.

I run the inquire and the output is:
Inquire cannot be run when there are one or more devices enabled for Microsoft Removable Storage.
So I've gone and disabled the drive but still didn't work.

I run the inquire -cl and the output is:
-l flag found: searching all LUNs, which may take over 10 minutes per adapter for some fibre channel adapters. Please be patient.
Inquire cannot be run when there are one or more devices enabled for Microsoft Removable Storage.
So I've gone and disabled the drive but still didn't work.

I run the jbconfig -s NetworkerServer
I choose Configure an SJI box.
Next, I've tried both 8 - Quantum DLT and 52 - Standard SCSI Jukebox.
Then I specify the control port, which I really don't know if I am getting the correct name, but I go to Device Manager under Tape Drives, do Properties for the Quantum DLT 4000, and find Location: Bus Number 0, Target ID 5, LUN 0
So I use scsidev@0.5.0
OR
I go to Manage Computer, Physical Location, HP C5173-4000, under drives, highlight Quantum DLT 4000 Drive and click properties, and Under Device Address - Port 2, Bus: 0, Target: 5, LUN: 0.
So I tried variation of that:
scsidev@2.0.5, scsidev@2.5.0, etc

Please Help!

Thanks!

Here's an update. I finally disabled the Tape Drive correctly under right click My Computer, Manage. Then I was able to run jbconfig -s NetworkerServer, used the Quantum Drive, but the controlport still doesn't make sense. I used scsidev@2.6.0, but I don't know where the 6 came from.

But I got through it, chose not to be a dedicated storage node so I can back up other servers at the remote site. I open up the Networker Administrator from the remote server and can see the autochangers only. I go back to my local Networker server and assign the remote autochanger to the pool. Then back to the remote networker server, I right click the autochanger and click operations. The tapes appear as unlabeled. I mount a single tape and try to label it. Error appears saying there's no label, so I went into the Edit of the autochanger and turn off labels, then receive an even uglier error.

I'll keep trying.

I'll post back with an update.

Thanks

You must disable the Removable Storage Service from the Services Panel.

I disabled RSS, now another message.
I try to mount, label, or do anything that forces Legato to tell the autochanger to do something. I get the following message in the console:
nsjrb notice: nsjrb -s NetworkerServer -j RemoteDeviceName : -Y -O1 -L -g -bPoolName -S 1-15 Full.001
RemoteDeviceName verify label operation in progress
media warning RemoteStorageNodeName reading: read open error: No media in drive.
RemoteDeviceName label without mount operation in progress
unload error for RemoteStorageNode detected. retrying

So to stop the retrying, I restarted the networker service on the remote storage node and following messages from the monitor came up:
check storage node: (nsrmmd missing from polling reply)
restarts nsrmmd and it says started as requested.

I'm thinking maybe I don't have the correct configuration for the Remote Device.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Look at you jukebox - obviously it is loading the wrong drive.

This happens when you change the drive sequence reported by inquire when you run jbconfig. It can also happen if Windows changes the drive sequence during a reboot. However, if the jukebox loads drive 1 but you (NW) talks to another one, then read errors are obvious.

You may also use the slow/verbode mode on another drive and wait until the error disappears.

The remote tape library has broken.
So, Plan B.

I built up a new remote NAS. I will set that up as a Storage Node. I want data at the remote site to write to disk on the Storage Node.

Do I need an additional license to do this, a diskbackup license or soemthing?

Also, I've tried contacting Legato Tech Support, but seeing that my company let the support agreement expire, they did not offer any help. I called Legato Licensing and they said they weren't technical enough to help. I left a message for my sales rep, but it's been a week and I have not heard back.
