UGH Day 1 of vacation, I get the call... MerMail Option 11 ... 6 year-old Tandberg Tape Drive (Model SLR4) has started screaching, making noises, even when Tape cartridge is out.

Can I have someone power it off for about 5 days until I am back in town to look at it? Or will this cause other problems? Thanks

Is it probably shot? What can I replace it with? Any suggestions on how best to handle from a distance.

phone your maintainer?

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

Yes you can switch it off, you obviously use it to back up your mail system? How often is it set to do a back up (hourly, daily, weekly?)
Its just that if your mailsystem crashes whilst you are away you would not have an up to date back up, depends how often changes are implemented.
The back up would be as old as when you switched it off.

if you have it turned off, cancel backups untill you get it replaced.. failed backups can cause other problems.. you'll need to get the same part number for backup.. mermail has never had a second option for loading and backup.. as stated, if mail crashes, your backups are to old to be much good AND you can't reload a box that will not boot if your tape drive is smoke..

Thnaks fo r the advice guys. I am the "maintainer" but have called my guy who helps remotely as needed. We backup daily, so I can ask him to turn off the backup so we can power down.

Ive been researching on Tandberg site and it sounds like SLR5 is compatible migration for SLR4. Those seem to be more available than slr4 unit.

Anyone using the slr5 model ?

your right, both will work..
