I recently build a new system for my daughter. As she wanted the most modern rig I selected the following setup.
MBO: Intel D875PBZ
CPU: P4 3.6HT E 800 fsb (Prescot)
Mem: 2 x 512 Meg Kingston PC4500
Drives: 2 x Maxtor 260 Gbyte Sata Raid
2 x Maxtor 260 Gbyte IDE
2 x Pioneer 8 speed DVD writers
PSU: 400 watts brand name
Case: Large tower with 4 fans, 2 x inlet on the side 1 x outlet on top, 1 x outlet on back panel.
Video: 256 Meg card.
Anyway all went well originally. But as soon as I applied 100% cpu load the bord temp went up to 49C the Cpu went to 70C and the drives were to hot to touch. Also the 400 watt supply started to drop the 12 volt line to less then 10.5 volts. Room temp was 36C.
Well obviously this was not reliable.
I changed the PSU to a Super Flower SF-500TS supply. This is rated as 500 watts continus or 560 watts peak. It has 4 large temp controlled fans. I tested it for 24 hours with a static load of 520 watts. No problems. It also has 12 IDE power connectors and 2 SATA connectors. After fitting it the MOBO temp went down to 44C. The CPU went to 64C. Probably dropped by the four large CPU fans. Still to hot. I then fitted a speed controlled Turbofan to the CPU, it comes with a massive copper heat sink and looks like a Jet engine. Temp now CPU 59-61C bord 42C. The drives still were to hot. I then fitted two drive coolers 2 fans each bolted to the SATA drives and two drive coolers to the IDE drives. The Ide coolers fit in two spare CD rom slots, they have two small fans each and an air filter. Result now as follows.
CPU 58-59C, MOBO 42C, drives 37C. This is with 100% cpu load and 36C room temp. On idle MOBO 37C CPU 45C. Well this is acceptable and well within spec's.
Maybe this can help somebody with the Prescot Wafle irons.
Regards
Jurgen
