Table problem

Hi, I designed a new page layout in Fireworks MX, sliced it up and exported to Dreamweaver MX. The page has a header and vertical nav buttons on the left side. The center will be for content (text, photos, etc). When I start adding content and hit return, the adjacent cells (nav buttons) get stretched out as the content expands down the page! How can I add content to the page without affecting the surrounding table cells?

The short answer is don't use tables for layout.

However, if you really must, put the nav buttons in their own table and put it in a single cell of the outer table (i.e nest it).

Thanks for the tip. Also, what is the alternative to tables when designing a web page?

CSS, and DIVs or other semantically correct elements.

Can you recommend any resources to get started with CSS or DIVs. I've done limited work with CSS, but nothing from scratch or page design.
