Hello

I got a couple of questions concerning our current T1 setup that feeds our Cisco 1751 and VG200.

Currently, we have two Serial WIC's in our 1751. One serial line runs to a channel bank that splits our data and long distance phone lines, and the other runs to a PPP (that will NOT be changing). In the near future, we're going to be eliminating that channel bank. The telco has already put in our new T1's that'll supply our Data (1 T1) and Voice (2nd T1).

Our 1751, currently does not have an RJ-45 T1 WIC in it, my question is, I'm thinking I'll have to get an RJ-45 WIC for that router before we cant use the new T1 beings it's NOT a channel bank right?? It's just a termination point that has an RJ-45 plug female plug in it.

Also, from our T1 termination point from the telco (don't know what the proper name for that is) do we need to have a Cross-Over cable running from there to our WIC's in our VG and 1751, or is it just a straight through patch cable??

This is all kind of new to me, so sorry if all of this sounds a little stupid..

Thanks

Lets work on some terminology.

D-Mark - Demarkation point where PSTN comes into your facility. In the case of T1s, it is usally where the smart jack is.

Smart Jack - RJ45 jack on the customer premise equipment.

Your smart jack is usually your d-mark.

WIC-1DSU-T1 - RJ45 WIC that terminates a T1 (non-channelized) with a built in CSU. Typically used for a Data T1.

VWIC-1MFT-T1 - Multiport Flex card for terminating both channelized and non-channelized T1s.

Channel Bank - device used to convert a T-1 to 24 analog lines.

The big question is where is the voice T1 going to terminate? You can use either WICs listed above to terminate the Data T-1 on your 1700 series router. You can also use a WIC-1T with an external CSU/DSU if you already have the equipment. I prefer the internal one myself. Less cables and easier to troubleshoot. You would use a straight through cable for that (although a cross over may work as well).

Excellent information! Thank You!

Our voice T1 is going to terminate in our VG200, which has two internail WIC's. One for our current long distance T1 and one for our local PRI.

Also, i just noticed that once I change the programing on those interfaces (getting rid of the time slots cause of the fractional T1) i'm going to loose all the voice-port and dial-peer configuration. Do you recommend anything special while doing this? I have a local copy, but it looks like I'll have to reporgram everything.

Thank you so much for your information. I greatly appreciate it.

You wont' lose your dial-peer configs, the port settings will get stripped from them, that is all..

Cool, so am I going to need another WIC w/built CSU/DSU for my 1751 since it only has serial T1 cards in it? On my new T1 termination point (or smart jack) it's going to be an RJ-45 cable running out of it.

So, i'm guessing i'm gonna have to buy an new Ethernet WIC right?

no

You need a T1 dsu wic..

its just a card that has the dsu built in. as compared to the external dsu you had earlier.. wic-1dsu-t1 is what you want.

for the vg200 you need a vwic-2mft-t1, make sure you check your dsp resources too..

This is the T1 card i'm looking at from CDW: That'll work right? It's a csu/dsu, but I can't find just the dsu..

Why do I only need the DSU?

I had a guy tell me that we could just leave the serial cards in there and buy an Adtran CSU from where ever. He told Adtran Part # is 102295L1 is the one we want. I can't find that damn thing anywhere though. What confuses me is, that i can't find any Adtran device that has a 48c port and a I/O serial port that can pass/take stuff to/from my 1751..

DSU is just part of the part number. That is the card you want for DATA ONLY!!. It will not terminate traditional voice T1s. Yes you could get an adtran external CSU (I have several), but the card you linked to is much easier. Don't purchase it new. Get it off of ebay. It is cheaper.

You should be able to get it for less than 200 dollars.

So the only advantage I would have with keeping the serial card in the 1751 is that I wouldn't have to reconfigure anything on it right?

I keep looking for an Adtran external CSU, but I can't find any that have the 48c and the 25 pin serial port.. I still can't find that particular part # that guy gave me either.

What do you recommend I do in this situation? I can't buy anything off of ebay, I just don't think my employer would go for it..

I probably should of through in that this 1751 will be the center spoke of a frame-relay WAN. I doubt that really changes anything, but I just thought I'd throw it in there..

Also, computerhigh, have you ever used any Kentronx devices? I found this: Is this a good one?

Don't make this into a big deal. It really isn't going to change your configuration. You might have to add a few commands under the serial interface for framing, etc. But get the WIC card with the CSU/DSU in it. It really makes like a lot easier and with the ebay pricing, it is very cheap.

A 1700 series router at the center of your frame netowrk is no big deal as long you aren't pumping more than a few megabits of data.
